William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”
Opened: November 2018
Location: Taos High School's Little Theatre
This November Teatro Serpiente presents William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. November 9th, 10th, 11th, 15th, 16th, & 17th at Taos High School’s Little Theatre. The play begins with a ghost — tis the season after all. Young Hamlet is mourning the death of his father, his uncle has just married his mother and oh-so-conveniently taken the throne. They would like to keep up appearances, but Hamlet is making this increasingly difficult with very public displays of his deep and lasting grief. Hamlet is visited by the ghost of his recently dead father who relays the story of a murder most foul and begs his son to revenge him. Thus begins Hamlet’s descent into madness as he attempts to justify vengeance, and struggles with his inability to act.
Hamlet is a play about transitions and the in-between places. It exists in a world between light and dark, sanity and madness, masculine and feminine, and life and death. None of these things are definitive. The play itself asks many questions to which there are no true answers. Is the ghost real or imagined? Is life worth all of this heartache and loss? When is love ever really pure? What exists beyond death? And, how do we find meaning in any of it?
The production is adapted and directed by Serena Jade Smith and features Adam Overley as Hamlet himself, Scott Tennant as Claudius, Gina Gargone as Gertrude, Rich Greywolf as Polonius, Jazzmine Freedom as Ophelia, Noah Pettus as Laertes, Ryan Maestas as Horatio, Ashley Turin as Marcellus, Jessica Fitzgerald as Rosencrantz, and Joel Larson as Guildenstern.
Come see Teatro Serpiente’s production of Hamlet and find out just what is so rotten in the state of Denmark. Tickets at the door $15 general, $12 students, seniors and educators. On Thursday, November 15th tickets for students are only $5.

Neil Simon’s “Rumors”
Opened: May 2017
Location: Taos High School Little Theater
Teatro Serpiente presents their small cast spring comedy Neil Simon’s “Rumors” at the Taos High School Little Theater Black Box. Tickets are $15 general admission and $12 for students, seniors and educators. For tickets please call 575-737-8574
“Rumors” is a hilarious romp through Simon’s brilliant comedic mind. The show takes place in the fictional suburb of Sneeden’s Landing just outside NYC. On the evening in question, four wealthy couples are preparing to gather at the home of Charley and Myra Brock to celebrate the couple’s tenth wedding anniversary. As the first guest arrive, they notice something is terribly, terribly awry. The downstairs is deserted, the help has mysteriously disappeared, there’s no ice in the bucket and the cheese dip is nowhere to be found! To make matters worse Ken and Kris Gorman pull up into the driveway and are welcomed by the jarring sound of gunshots. They rush into the house to find Charley Brock crying like a baby on his bedroom floor bleeding all over the white rug and his wife Myra is gone. As Ken and Kris try to piece together what happened to their best friends on the night of their tenth wedding anniversary, other guests begin to arrive. Ken and Kris are coming apart at the seams, but they try to hold it together and keep the truth from their friends until they find out what really happened to Charley and Myra.
As you can imagine, the hilarity that ensues involves a pervasive air of confusion and a series of well timed opening and slamming of doors in the immaculate style of traditional farce. Don’t miss Teatro Serpiente’s lively, side-splitting, and always entertaining production of “Rumors”.

Twelfth Night
Opened: July 2016
Primary Actors: Gina Gargone, Serena Smith, Karla Eoff, Adam Overley-Black, Noah Yacko, Ryan Maestas, Helen Rynaski , Jessica Fry, Rich Greywolf, Julianne Moyer, Sally Tennant-Henzerling, Pasqual Maestas, Linda Stokas, Jess Fitzgerald, Martha Grossman, Patrick McMurray,
In Twelfth Night, William Shakespeare’s high-spirited comedy set in the land of Illyria, shipwrecked twins Viola and Sebastian each believe the other has died. Disguised as a young man, Viola becomes Cesario and enters into the service of Duke Orsino (whom she promptly falls in love with), who sends Cesario as an emissary to win the affections of Lady Olivia (who is in mourning for her dead brother), who (of course) falls in love with Cesario.
Then Sebastian arrives on the scene and (of course) is mistaken for his disguised sister, which brings about a duel (don’t ask) and his marriage (his what?) to Olivia.
Meanwhile, back at Olivia’s, her uncle Sir Toby Belch, gentlewoman Maria, and fool Festa, along with Sir Andrew Aguecheek (who wishes to court Olivia), toy with the pompous steward Malvolio to pass the time and entertain themselves, bringing about even more illusion and confusion.
To recap: Viola loves Orsino, who thinks he loves Olivia, who thinks she loves Cesario, who is really Viola. Malvolio thinks he is a gentleman but he is not and Sir Andrew thinks he is a match for Olivia but he isn’t. Mistaken identity, impersonations, secret marriages, duels, pranks. Does anyone really know what’s up? Will everyone live happily ever after? Well, it is Shakespeare.
Come find out. Performances are at Taos Mesa Brewing, beginning at 7:00 p.m., Thursdays through Saturdays, July 21, 22, 23 and 28, 29, 30. Tickets are $15 general admission and $12 for seniors and students. No reservations are necessary, but bring your own chair or blanket (seating not provided). For more information, go to teatroserpiente.com.
Directed by Scott Tennant with Adam Overley-Black. Stage manager Leandra Munoz. Costumes by Carol Kalem and Elayna Snyder. Original music by Martha Grossman. Set by Sarah Hart and Cisco Velarde.

Keep It Spinning!
Opened: May 2015
Taos Charter School and Teatro Serpiente are once again bringing original musical theater to Taos. The group is launching their after-school theater program for grades 6th through 12th grade, called Keep it Spinning! starting this February. The program will be offered free to Taos youth, Students only need to audition to secure a spot. The idea was brought to the group by Richard Greywolf, founding member of Teatro Serpiente and teacher at Taos Charter school. Greywolf spearheaded a similar project while teaching in North Carolina. “Ten years ago when I was a teacher in the Great Smoky Mountains, in Bryson City, North Carolina I had a unique opportunity to work with some very talented youth. I was encouraged to incorporate theater and music into my curriculum. The result was a two month long project where students wrote, workshopped, performed and produced their own work as an original musical.”
Keep it Spinning! will take place over the course of six weeks. Throughout the program students will have the opportunity to create original songs, learn the basics of acting, directing and stagecraft, and most importantly work collaboratively on a creative adventure. The project’s final result is a weekend of performances with students experiencing the satisfaction of performing their work for family and friends at a professional theater in Taos. “Fostering creativity in our youth and also teaching them the fine art of group collaboration — allowing each voice to be heard while blending unique perspectives into a cohesive whole- for me it’s the entire essence of what it means to effectively communicate,” says Gina Gargone, another member of Teatro Serpiente contributing to the project.

The Odd Couple
Opened: October 2013
Location: Working Class Theatre's Playhouse on Gusdorf Road
Primary Actors: Rich Greywol, Scott Tennant, Ruth Farhbach, Adam Overley, David Perez, Jim Sanborn, Jane Ayles, Michelle Moore,
Roommates. We’ve all had them — some good, some bad, some indifferent. Ironically enough, it’s usually the people we’re closest to that end up being the worst roomates. Why? Well, if you’re looking for the funny answer, you’ll find all that and more in Teatro Serpiente’s production of Neil Simon’s comedy The Odd Couple.
Meet Oscar Madison, a 40-year-old sports writer living in New York in the mid 1960’s. He’s a man’s man, hosting Friday night poker games with the boys in his apartment, smoking only the finest cigars, and whenever possible enjoying a gourmet meal. Oscar has it all — a great job, an eight-room apartment, and a beautiful wife. Oh wait, that beautiful wife left him six months ago, and she took the maid with her. Not much in Oscar’s lifestyle has changed, in fact he still can’t figure out why Blanche left him, but now he rattles around his big eight-room apartment by himself with just his dirty laundry, moldy sandwiches, and cigarette butts to keep him company. There’s also no one left to clean up after him. A fine bachelor life — or so he thinks.
Then, late one night during a poker game, Oscar’s friend Felix Ungar busts through the door announcing his wife wants a divorce. Felix is so broken up his friends are afraid to let him go to the bathroom alone. Oscar invites Felix to room with him in his bachelor pad until they can get him back on his feet. Little does Oscar know that when Felix accepts he’s getting more than he roommate. He’s getting a live-in maid, gourmet cook, and the general uptight, neurotic, nagging mess that is Felix Ungar. And then there’s all those little things, like his unique sinus conditions and a penchant for obsessive vacuuming.
The Odd Couple is Teatro Serpiente’s final production of their 2013 season. In addition to being a stage play, The Odd Couple was adapted for the screen, and, as most of us know, was a popular television show in the 70’s. Fall is in the air, and the nights are getting colder. Teatro wants audiences to walk away with smiles on their faces, warm feelings in their hearts, and perhaps a bit of nostalgia for a good old fashioned feel-good comedy to buoy their hearts during the winter months. The show is directed by guest director Susan McQuade, who played Robin Starveling in this summer’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The cast includes Teatro core members Rich Greywolf and Scott Tennant as Felix and Oscar, respectively. Ruth Farhbach, Adam Overley, David Perez, and Jim Sanborn as the poker boys, and Jane Ayles and Michelle Moore as the Coo Coo Pigeon Sisters.
Don’t miss Teatro Serpiente’s The Odd Couple at Working Class Theater’s Playhouse. Showdates are October 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th. All shows start at 7 p.m. with the exception of the Sunday October 13th matinee at 4 p.m. Doors will open a half hour before showtime for light refreshment, coffee, and tea. Tickets are $15 with a matinee special of $12 tickets for reserved groups of 5 or more. There will also be an open dress rehearsal “freeview” on Wednesday, October 9th, for those who cannot afford the full ticket price — or those who are interested in seeing the show twice!
Teatro Serpiente is a community theater organization with a deep commitment to fostering arts in Taos and the surrounding areas. For reservations and more information please call 737.8574 or visit Teatro Serpiente’s facebook page. See you there– for a beer-can-exploding, peanut-throwing, rollicking good time. Would you expect anything less?

Teatro Serpiente presents our third annual summer Shakespeare production A Midsummer Night’s Dream, outdoors at the KTAOS solar center. Join Teatro Serpiente on the solar center lawn, kick off your shoes and drink in the view as we weave a dream of midsummer’s eve where passion rules, love is blind, and those who lose their way may grow donkey ears.
Join us on July 19th, 20th, 26th and 28th; all shows start at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $15.
Directed by Rich Greywolf. Set design and construction by Jeremy Jones and Sarah Hart; costumes by Laine Ember and Mary Emery.
